In pursuing these standards, our schools shall seek to provide each individual with the knowledge and skills necessary to become an independent learner, a contributing member of the community, and a responsible citizen of the United States in an increasingly interdependent world. As an integral part of the educational process, ACSU schools will work in partnership with families and the community to help students develop the qualities of honesty, respect, self-reliance, perseverance, and responsibility to self and others. In fulfilling this mission, ACSU schools shall be accountable to families and the community for both educational results and fiscal responsibility.

Leicester Central School is a small, rural school serving pre-kindergarten to sixth grade. We are on Route 7 between Middlebury and Brandon. Leicester is home to three lakes and Branbury State Park, which is full of hiking, boating, and camping. We are proud of our student results both in the classroom and on the required NECAP tests. Leicester students perform above the RNESU and State averages in reading, mathematics, and science. We have closed the “achievement gap” in these three curricular areas, with our free and reduced lunch population outperforming the non-free and reduced lunch populations. Leicester’s free and reduced lunch population is approximately 45%. We credit the following for this success: a knowledgeable, capable, and caring staff who themselves are learners; an educational support system that identifies students needing additional behavioral and academic support; small instructional groups in reading and mathematics; preschool, full-day kindergarten, after-school and summer extended year programs. Leicester Central School is a place where every student shines. We work hard to sustain a caring learning environment where students are committed to our school values and take pride in their work. At Leicester, all students are provided with opportunities for academic, social and emotional growth.
Our school's essential purpose is to insist that all of our students learn to use their minds well. Our essential purpose is evident when: Students internalize "habits of mind" by regularly asking such questions as: · What did you notice? · What's your evidence? · How and where does what you've learned fit in? · Could things have been otherwise? · What difference does it make? Students engage actively in their learning through exploration, observation direct experience, and self-reflection. Students exercise self direction, perseverance, and intellectual curiosity. Students make connections, transfer knowledge to new situations, and create work that is meaningful to themselves and others. Students have ample time to practice, synthesize, and reflect on what they're learning. Students engage regularly in problems and experiences they view as real and relevant, and articulate what is important to them. Students make choices about their learning. Students demonstrate publicly what they learn. Students are integral members of the school and greater communities and use resources to recognize, explore, and respond to current issues.
