On September 30, 2012, funding from the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW or "Obesity Grant") grant will terminate. But the impact the funds have made on Alleghany Schools' facilities and healthy initiative programs will continue for many years in the future.A few years ago, Patti Cox, Alleghany Schools Director of Student Services, discovered a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with health and school officials from Ashe and Watauga Counties to apply for the CPPW grant funds. After obtaining tons of data and information regarding the health and obesity rates in the 3-county area, Mrs. Cox and the other grant writers met numerous times to finalize the push for funds. All efforts paid off when our area received $1.65 million dollars to share proportionally with Ashe and Watauga and support important efforts to promote better health in the area.
