Zeigler-Royalton Community Unit School District #188 was formed in 1962 in consolidation with the Zeigler Grade School, Zeigler High School, and Royalton School Districts. Elementary classes were held in the Leiter School in Zeigler, and the Royalton School, which also housed the junior high school. High School classes were held in the Zeigler High School building during 1963-64, but moved to the old Zeigler Grade School after the high school was closed due to coal mine subsidence. The present Zeigler-Royalton High School opened in the fall of 1966. The current elementary/junior high school opened in 1980. Both school buildings are located on a forty-acre campus approximately two and one-half miles north of Zeigler, IL. The Zeigler-Royalton school district has an enrollment of approximately 650 students.
