BEACON PREPARATORY SCHOOL
Beacon Preparatory School is a 6-8 grade charter middle school based in Bloomington, Minnesota. Originally named Veritas, it started in Plymouth, MN as a sister school to Beacon Academy, a K-5 charter school. In the winter of 2007-2008 school year, its sponsor Friends of Education, notified Seven Hills Classical Academy (a K-5 charter school also sponsored by Friends of Education) that the school was looking for a new home due to changes in the relationship with its sister K-5 school partner--Beacon Academy. At the time, Seven Hills was interested in expanding its charter to eighth grade and adding Beacon Prep would help fulfill that objective without having to re-submit its charter agreement with the MN department of Education-which can be a long and laborious proces. In the 2008-2009 school year, Beacon Prep officially moved to Bloomington, MN and was the impetus for the expansion of the current facility--Cedar Valley Church. The school began with a 6th grade, then 7th and finally all three grades in 2010-2011 school year--and graduated its first class in the spring of 2011. Beacon Prep is a Classical Core Knowledge middle school, chartered 6th thru 12th grade. It shares newly remodeled and expanded facilites with Seven Hills Classical Academy and occupies the second floor in arguably one of the best charter school facilities in the state of MN. It has recently renewed it's authorizer's (Friends of Education) contract as well as a strong and stable lease agreement with Cedar Valley Church. Overall strong student proficiency and learning growth scores are postive outcomes that key stakeholders--parents, teacher, leadership and the Board of Directors focus on when evaluating the progress of the school. The strategic plan, curriculum plans and classroom managment and size all are key factors that help contribute and the scores in both proficiency and growth. The 2009-2010 test score results showed the school outperformed its comparision school and Beacon Prep in both proficiency and growth AND ranked in the top three of all Friends of Education schools--that includes some of the best academic performing schools in the state of MN. With positive academic outcomes and a strong foundation of facilities, leadership and enrollment as a backdrop, Beacon Prep still has room to grow. With its new full-time director on-board, additional emphasis will be placed on executing the curriculum plan, creating the best overall experience for its students and community while keeping high expectations for academic achievement at the forefront of future activites as it prepares its students for high school and beyond.

HIAWATHA ACADEMIES
Our Values HIAWATHA ACADEMY'S CORE VALUES: H.E.A.R.T. All Hiawatha schools have adopted a clear set of school-wide values by which students, teachers, parents and leadership pledge to live at all times: Honor. Excellence, Always Try Again, Responsibility, and Team. Teachers, leaders and parents will live by these values and model them for our young scholars. By learning the values of H.E.A.R.T. at an early age, our students will be prepared to go to and through college and to be citizens that serve the common good. Honor Honor in its purest form is the ability to recognize the goodness in each individual and to respect oneself and others. Honor also encompasses integrity, honesty, and making decisions that are self-evident and appeal to a higher moral code. At Hiawatha Academies, students will learn to honor each other, the school, their families, their community, and themselves. Faculty will model honor by treating students, families, and one another with respect. In addition, teachers will model self-worth by dressing and conducting themselves professionally. Students will honor each other by treating all members of Hiawatha Academies' team and family with respect and courtesy. Students will also learn to honor themselves. Students will learn to take accountability for their actions and to do the right thing even when no one else is watching. By doing so, they will be true to themselves and maintain integrity even when others around them do not. While honoring themselves, their teachers and their community, students will remain humble and remember that with all their success they are never too important to remember who they are and the responsibility they have to their community. Excellence Everyday Students, teachers and staff will strive for excellence in both academics and character. Students will be expected to develop the critical thinking skills, desire, discipline, and attention to detail to do their best work. This means that students will complete 100% of their class work and homework, with special care taken in neatness and homework turned in on time. When students have yet to meet these standards, they will be asked to redo their work. Teachers will be vital in modeling excellence to their students. Teachers will embody thoughtful lesson planning, creative and innovative instruction, and a strong focus on academic results. Always Try Again Students will embody determination and relentless pursuit in the face of the economic, social, and political obstacles they face each day. Each day, students will set academic and leadership goals that they will strive to meet. One of the school's mottos is "make mistakes and brainstorm solutions." Students will spend time in the afternoon meeting reflecting on these goals- celebrating their successes and making an action plan for the next day. When a student is struggling, she or he will be supported and encouraged to remember the importance of perseverance—that dreams can be realized with hard work and by asking for help. Responsibility Service and taking ownership for making positive change every single day is at the core of Hiawatha Academies' mission. Students will take responsibility for their own learning, for their own actions, and for helping their teammates to ensure that everyone learns and succeeds. All students will use their hard work and responsibility to complete all of their class work and lifework, to actively participate in class, to think critically about what they are learning, and to work with their teammates to challenge each other and get better every day. For example, when the school has added more grades, 5th grade students will mentor incoming kindergarteners and take responsibility for their younger teammates. Hiawatha Academies will establish a culture where students also take responsibility for helping their peers. For example, a struggling student's lifework buddies may call him/her every night or another child may check the student's agenda at the end of the day to ensure the child has his/her lifework. In addition, students will learn the importance of making small and large positive changes every day, such as saying thank you to someone who helps them. Team The saying "team beats individual" is central to the culture of Hiawatha Academies. The concept of team is much larger than teamwork. While teamwork suggests that teammates work together to help one another, team implies that every student and staff member must always remember that s/he is an active member of one or more teams. Engaging in teamwork sometimes is not good enough; instead, students and staff members will always be encouraged to make decisions that will benefit the entire team. Students will work together as teams to plan and complete community service projects. Teachers will work closely together so they may all achieve the mission of the school. For example, teachers will collaborate with other teachers to evaluate student work and maintain a common standard for student writing across all subjects. In addition, much of the school's discipline and reward system will be public, taking place with the understanding that the school is one team and one family. Teammates will be expected to help each other through difficult times, support one another, and help everyone maximize their learning potential.

INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT 287
Our district aspires to meet the challenge of our strategic plan by measuring how well we are serving our members. One important measure is the extent to which districts declare satisfaction with the value and effectiveness of specialized services we deliver to them. In order to do this, we must know what each district needs from us specifically so that we can tailor our programs, services and responses. This is the purpose of our Conditions of Satisfaction (COS) tool. Last spring we asked every member district to complete a COS form in three areas: business services, special education and general education. This tool asks them to state what conditions we would have to meet for them to declare they are satisfied with our work. Now it is time to take these forms back to each district’s lead contact in Business Services, Special Education and Teaching and Learning so they can “mark our report card,” so to speak. They can rank us on a scale of 1 – 4 for each statement of a condition of satisfaction they told us was important to them: 1 being Unsatisfied, and 4 being Very Satisfied.

METRO SCHOOLS CHARTER
Lighthouse Academy of Nations is a college preparatory high school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We offer small class sizes, less than 15 to 20 students, allowing us to focus on the individual and strengthen his/her skills needed for college. School staff utilizes an extended day schedule to help bridge the educational gap and improve a student’s chance to attend the college or university of their choice. Another important factor for our success is our dedication to providing an environment that is safe and conducive to learning. The diversity in our staff provides further support to our students; we are able to help them understand the path to college and how to succeed once accepted. We also help them understand and work with the issues facing today’s youth by reaching beyond the classroom. We bring in guest speakers, visit universities, join competitions, participate in team-building activities, and encourage students to take leadership roles. These opportunities give our students the confidence to focus on their studies and develop a solid work ethic both in class and through extracurricular activities.

Mission The Southside Family Charter School (SFCS) is a small, k-8 school that meets the needs of a culturally and ethnically diverse population by engaging children in critical thinking and problem solving, involving children in political and social activism, encouraging creative expression, offering a wide range of electives and advocating for children and families.
