Six schools open their doors to Ashland's youth each September, providing a comprehensive education in all grade levels. Nearly 3,000 students attend Ashland High School, Ashland Middle School and our three elementary schools, Bellview, Helman, and Walker. John Muir Elementary is a K-8 magnet school with a curriculum focus on Science and the Arts. The Willow Wind Community Learning Center is a part time alternative program that primarily serves home-schooling families. Approximately 300 full-time and part-time teachers, support staff and administrators provide high quality instructional programs. Ashland's schools maintain and develop personalized, continuous, and progressive learning for students in reading and language arts, science, math, social science, fine arts, health, and physical education. An integrated arts program is provided at all elementary schools, with specialized classes available at the middle and high schools.
We are currently involved in activities to improve the academics and the culture of our school district. A large portion of our professional development is a result of being part of the Oregon Response to Intervention (OrRTI) grant. This program’s main focus is to improve core instruction in the classroom by improving teaching methods of the 5 “big ideas” in grades kindergarten through five. The five big ideas are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The implementation process will be three years with teacher support continuing on after that. Our school uses AimsWeb as our in school screening, progress monitoring and diagnostic tool. The data from AimsWeb and other sources such as state testing and in-class assessments are used to create the best learning path for the student. Another whole school program we are involved in is being a Stewardship School as part of Oregon Natural Resource Education Program (ONREP) sponsored by Oregon State University. This program provides our school with natural resource curriculum for our teacher to use in the classroom. One part of the rationale for implementing this program is that the location of our school is in the middle of the forest, near mountains, rivers, and other ecological areas. Our school has acquired the shuttered Butte Falls fish hatchery and intends to transform it into a natural resource learning center for students from all schools. Another reason we have implemented the natural resource curriculum in our schools is for the students. This curriculum offers real world, hands-on projects that are relevant to the student. We will have long term and short to projects that allow students to apply to apply their learning to real life activities. We are proud of the many things we are doing to improve teaching and learning in Butte Falls. We have worked hard and will continue to work hard for the betterment of our students.
Central Point School District 6, in partnership with parents and community, is dedicated to assisting students to reach their individual potential as productive, responsible participants in society. Within an environment that encourages learning, students will acquire skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to successfully meet the opportunities and challenges of the 21st Century.
Located in the gateway to the spectacular Oregon Cascades, our school district provides exceptional opportunities for students. 100 percent of our teachers are rated Highly Qualified, and we are making a long-term investment in their success using the “Four Characteristics of Improved School Districts.” Our schools are constantly broadening options for students by offering a growing number of online courses, in addition to more traditional classes. We work closely with families through parent clubs, online links to teachers and student progress data. We offer an innovative Family Support Program and health services that are designed to keep kids in school and learning. The work is paying off: Students at every level and in every subgroup are making progress in reading and mathematics. We take great pride in our students and our schools.
We are a high quality teaching and learning organization dedicated to preparing all students to graduate with a sound educational foundation, ready to succeed in post-secondary education, and to be contributing community members.
