• 21ST CENTURY CHARTER SCH OF GARY

  
  

  Charter schools are free, public schools in Indiana that have been “freed” from some of the rules and regulations that apply to traditional public schools and other private and parochial schools, but that are held to a different level of accountability. Because charter schools are actually created by the approval of a “charter,” the terms of the charter must be met in order for the charter school to remain open. While charter schools obtain funding from the State, they only receive a portion of the funds that go to traditional public schools. Charter schools do receive the funds that follow a student in Indiana from public school to public school, but they do not receive the transportation funds and capital funds that traditional public schools receive.

  East Chicago Urban Enterprise Academy is managed by American Quality Schools, a not-for-profit educational management company that operates charter schools in the Midwest. AQS schools are public charter schools, and offer open admission to all residents of Chicago, grades K-8.

  Twenty Indiana schools were recognized by Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Tony Bennett, at the Statehouse on Thursday, March 1, 2012. Based on data from the Indiana Growth Model, these schools were selected for having the largest percentage of students achieving high academic growth in either Mathematics or English/Language Arts last school year. “Every school here today is proving that all students are capable of academic growth—no matter their gifts, limitations or knowledge attained before entering a classroom,” Bennett said. “It’s an honor to distinguish these educators who are pushing students to reach their highest academic potential.” “The Growth Model is truly a game-changer that has transformed education in Indiana,” Bennett said. “The model has improved the way the state measures student and school progress by looking beyond test scores. At the local level, the Growth Model lets teachers and school leaders tailor instruction to push all students to meet their full potential.” Lincoln Elementary School was recognized for achieving the highest growth in the state in English/Language Arts. They achieved this #1 ranking in English/Language Arts growth with a percentage of 65.87.

  The Whiting Public Schools serve students from Pre-School through High School Nathan Hale Elementary School emphasizes early childhood intervention strategies and computer based learning tools to give every child a good start. The Nathan Hale Homework Club and the Read-Up program promote achievement. Nathan Hale introduces music, art, and athletics. Whiting Middle School recognizes that students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are unique. The Middle School meets their specific needs.
