Imagine a school whose classroom is the community, where a learner-centered, project-based approach nurtures each individual child within the context of partnership between parents, teachers, students, and community members. Community Charter School is a no-cost, public charter school serving grades K-5 in Charlotte’s historic Cherry neighborhood. Students learn in multi-grade classrooms (K-1, 2-3 or 4-5) where each individual can learn at their own pace. With two full time art teachers, CCS integrates studio and performing arts into a standards-based curriculum to provide our students with a rich environment that is truly a place to grow

Elon Homes and Schools for Children, Inc. (EHSC), was pleased to be granted one of the first North Carolina Department of Public Instruction official Charter Public School certifications in 1997. Our intent for the school - named the Kennedy Charter Public School, Inc. in memory of Fred J. Kennedy, founder of Boy's Town of Charlotte - was to educate at-risk or otherwise disadvantaged youth in our care as well as students from across the community. The school has grown dramatically since that time, and with it, so has our academic rigor and educational results. With the addition of Kennedy Charter's elementary program in 2009, we began offering early educational attention to K-1 students. That program, too, has grown steadily as word has spread about the academic impact our small class sizes and expert instruction is yielding for our students.Today Kennedy Charter Public School is poised to offer K-12 education, a unique scenario in the Charlotte area. Our extended school day, extraordinary school leadership, small class sizes, innovative teaching practices, free transportation, new academic facility and compassionate staff make us unique among schools in the Charlotte area.Research shows that a student who graduates with a high school diploma has significantly better chances for success in life relative to employment, relationships, personal development, health and decision making. To this end we work with every student in every grade to help him or her, in every way, be successful at our school.

If I were to describe Socrates Academy in one word, I would have to say "family." As trite as that sounds, it fits many aspects of working in this school. This is a diverse family, with all the spice and variety that one could expect to find in any large family, but with one unifying goal, the success of the students. The daily routines of co-existence, balancing curriculum with state and national goals, global integration with the Greek staff, along with classroom management and the business of teaching is evident, but it is how this is achieved that sets this school apart from many others. This school's staff is a buzz with creativity in this supportive home. Walk down any hallway, on any day and feel the current of engaged students taking part in their classroom as active participants in the Socratic Method of teaching. Classrooms are taught by effective teachers that are continuously in communication with their fellow teachers, striving to learn and share from each other. Students feel support and encouragement from caring adults, but are also reminded of the Socrates Proud rules for behavior, to peacefully maintain unity throughout the grade levels. The staff is familiar with all the students and they find time to greet them, listen to their stories and share in their lives. The students understand that they are loved, but that they are also expected to achieve the high goals set for them. This kindness and respect is created from the top down, from the supportive board and administration down through the teachers to the students. The parents are also active members of the Socrates family, always ready to volunteer many hours and are quick to participate in multiple directions. With this support of EACH member of the family, the students have no choice but to succeed-Laurie Sullivan.-Socrates Academy Art Teacher
