  Our Mission: Beacon Charter High School for the Arts develops artistic thinkers by nurturing self-expression while preparing our graduates with the academic skills necessary for sustained postsecondary success. Our Vision: The school has achieved many of its initial goals through sustained academic success and the purchase of our facility. In the near future, we will renovate the facility, beginning with the first floor, identify additional sources of revenue, particularly through grant funding and a capital campaign, and begin to explore growth options. Beacon will maintain the quality of its program offerings by continuing to evolve.

• BLACKSTONE ACADEMY

  
  

  Blackstone Academy was established in 2002 as a small, public high school of choice for students from Central Falls and Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The school was founded to give students in these communities the option of attending a college-preparatory high school that connects learning to the community. Through participation in our signature Community Improvement Projects, Blackstone students learn skills that will benefit them as they learn how to become real world problem solvers. Rigorous coursework prepares our students for college and other programs of higher education. The mission of Blackstone Academy Charter School is to build a strong community of learners and leaders. Our small educational environment helps foster independent inquiry, teamwork, and communication. Our students develop the skills to solve problems and use their voices in ways that lead to success in the academic, social, and professional arenas. They demonstrate their achievements through a process of discovery, presentation, and reflection. Community involvement and community improvement are key themes at BACS. In addition to classes, our portfolio system structures the progression of their learning by having students study themselves and their relationships to others, move forward with an exploration of the local community, and ultimately integrate an understanding of the wider world as students become responsible, motivated, life-long learners.

  The Burrillville School Department is a public school district that serves the Town of Burrillville, located about 20 miles from Providence in northwestern Rhode Island, bordering both Connecticut and Massachusetts. Burrillville, incorporated in 1806, is a rural community comprised of nine villages spanning 57.3 square miles: Bridgeton, Glendale, Harrisville, Mapleville, Mohegan, Nasonville, Oakland, Pascoag, and Wallum Lake. The Mission of the Burrillville Public School System is to provide high quality education to all students in a secure, nurturing environment in which all are challenged to reach full potential as life-long learners, responsible citizens and contributing members of society, recognizing its role as the education center of our unique and evolving community.

• CENTRAL FALLS

  
  

  Central Falls School District is an urban school district of 2,900 students and 19,000 residents approximately 10 miles north of the Capitol City of Providence. The City of Central Falls located in Rhode Island encompasses a land area of 1.27 square miles. We serve a diverse population. Over fifty-percent of Central Falls residents are of Hispanic decent. The mission of the Central Falls School Community is to develop its diverse student population into responsible citizens, effective communicators, innovative problem-solvers and critical thinkers who are able to fully participate in and positively contribute to society. The school community is committed to the attainment of high standards by all students by ensuring a literacy-rich learning environment and providing results-oriented educational leadership at all levels.

A VISION FOR EDUCATION IN CUMBERLAND: The vision of Cumberland School Department is to support the educational development of the whole child through proven strategies and a guaranteed and viable curriculum. As a result, students are aware of their global community, are active civic participants and achieve proficiencies which allow them to make valuable life choices. Through high expectations and best practice, students are led by an academy of teachers, administrators and staff dedicated to academic excellence. • DAVIES CAREER AND TECH

  
  

  William M. Davies, Jr. Career and Technical High School, located in Lincoln, Rhode Island, is a local education agency (LEA) serving approximately 850 students from six sending districts: Central Falls, Lincoln, North Providence, Pawtucket, Providence, and Smithfield. Davies is a state-operated school governed by an independent, business-led Board of Trustees. Students must take an entance examination and apply for admissions to Davies. The mission of the William M. Davies, Jr. Career and Technical High School is to provide its student population a learning environment that is constantly improving its teaching delivery and mentoring/support systems to stimulate and nurture the students' intellectual growth, self-discovery, and aspirations to attain the following practices: Demonstrate respect, responsibility, and readiness to succeed; Exhibit creative and critical thinking; Acquire academic and technical training preparedness and appreciate an excellence for learning; Demonstrate a passion for learning, understand the value of education, and foster a commitment for life-long learning

  The Department was established by the state legislature in 1980 by merging children's programs previously administered by 4 different state agencies. The Director of DCYF is also a member of the RI Children's Cabinet, which addresses cross-departmental issues relating to children’s needs and services. We are one of a small group of states that integrate the 3 major public responsibilities for troubled children, youth and families in one agency: Child Welfare, Children's Behavioral Health, and Juvenile Corrections. It is the mission of DCYF to assist families with their primary responsibility to raise their children to become productive members of society. We recognize our obligations to promote, safeguard and protect the overall well-being of culturally diverse children, youth and families and the communities in which they live through a partnership with families, communities and government.

• BLACKSTONE VALLEY PREP A RI MAYORAL ACADEMY

  
  

  Blackstone Valley Prep (BVP) Mayoral Academy is a network of tuition-free public schools chartered by the Rhode Island Department of Education. As a growing network of schools, BVP offers a high quality public school choice to the families of Lincoln, Cumberland, Central Falls and Pawtucket and currently serves 770 scholars in grades K-3 and 5-7. A member of the Rhode Island Mayoral AcademiesSM network, BVP’s mission is to prepare every scholar for success in college and the world beyond. Our school culture is founded on the core PRIDE values: Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Discipline and Enthusiasm. Scholars, families and staff are expected to live and implement these in their daily work.   At Highlander Charter School, students get individual attention, build lasting bonds, and use customized plans to learn in the ways that are most effective for them. Highlander is an urban charter school with 272 students in grades K-8 located in the heart of Providence. It offers all the benefits of a private school – small classes, diverse populations, individual attention from teachers – in a public school setting. With only 18 students in each class, the diversity of each student at Highlander is celebrated. Each student works with teachers specially trained to help students, even those with learning differences, master reading and math. Together, students and teachers develop individualized learning plans that help students acquire the skills they need while learning about things that really interest them.

  The International Charter School is a dual language, elementary public school of choice, located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The Rhode Island Department of Education allows charter schools to be established by public school districts or Rhode Island non-profit organizations. The International Institute of Rhode Island was granted the initial charter for the International Charter School in 2001. The mission of ICS is to integrate the diverse languages and cultures of the communities it serves by teaching all students in two languages-in Spanish and English or in Portuguese and English-and helping children develop an appreciation of other cultures. Children learn to work collaboratively from their multiple experiences and backgrounds, striving towards high standards of academic achievement. Everyone is part of a community of learners, engaging in inquiry about the world, themselves, and others.

  The Rhode Island School for the Deaf is a critical, strategic and responsive educational center with a commitment to educational excellence for children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, an important low incidence population. The Rhode Island School for the Deaf’s mission is to ensure that all Rhode Island children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing become literate, independent, and productive citizens who set and achieve life goals.

  Scituate has three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The elementary schools, Clayville, Hope and North Scituate, educate students from kindergarten through grade 5. In addition, there is a pre-school program for special needs youngsters at the North Scituate Elementary school. The mission of the Scituate School system is to provide all students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible, contributing citizens in an ever-changing world.

  The Segue Institute for Learning, one of the state’s newest charter schools, serves students in grades 6th to 8th from the City of Central Falls. The school was founded and created in 2006 as part of an on-going neighborhood mobilization movement that engaged all facets of the community. The mission of the Segue Institute for Learning is to foster a community where students take ownership of their education. Segue scholars receive a rigorous academic experience that prepares them to excel in the high school and eventual college setting of their choice. At Segue, we believe that all of our students are AT PROMISE, versus being labeled At Risk. The Segue Institute for Learning is a safe and nurturing environment which promotes diversity, encourages individual growth, and allows students to view themselves as citizens of change in their homes and community.

  UCAP (The Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program) is located in Providence, Rhode Island. Founded in 1989, we are a unique alternative independent public middle school dedicated to reducing the dropout rates in Providence, Central Falls, and Cranston. The Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program seeks to intervene in the lives of adolescents at risk of dropping out. We strive to create a supportive community that motivates students with a coherent, relevant, and challenging accelerated program that will help them attain the academic and social skills necessary for success in high school and in life. We stress the importance of achieving at high levels by taking responsibility, setting goals, working hard, taking risks, and having fun.
