We are a school division committed to our students and providing an excellent educational program. Our teachers value the uniqueness of each student and strive to challenge them daily. Teaching engaging lessons rooted in the Standards of Learning augmented by a variety of resources makes every day critical for the achievement for our students. To ensure our teachers can focus on teaching and our students can focus on learning, our division has an outstanding group of support staff. Whether they answer telephones, drive buses, serve food, assist classroom teachers, develop curriculum, or maintain our facilities, each employee knows their efforts make a significant impact on our students.
One of the oldest schools in Virginia and the second of its kind in the world, the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB), located in historic and scenic Staunton, VA, was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on March 31, 1838. As the school celebrates more than 170 years of continued excellence in educating deaf and blind children, it remains at the forefront of educational technology. The school utilizes some of the latest and most advanced audio-visual equipment and disability tailored computer applications in its classrooms to provide its students with the best education. Now, as in 1839, the arms of the school are open wide for the deaf and blind children of Virginia. Our mission at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is to provide educational and residential services that promote: Value for each person and their unique abilities; Success in meeting each student’s academic goals; Diversity in instruction to meet the needs of all students; Building opportunities that foster expertise in technology and its integration, communication, and achievement for all staff and students and their families.
