The philosophy of the New Shoreham School Department is based on the premise that the most valuable resource of the Town of New Shoreham is its children. It is our belief that schools benefit not only children and their parents, but all of society, by helping to assure that each individual is capable of contributing to the overall good of humankind. The school experience should be a catalyst to help students clarify their own goals and values, to acquire healthy attitudes toward success and failure, to understand the function of experimentation in learning, and to gain sufficient confidence to take appropriate risks in order to achieve. Fundamental to the educational process is the conviction that students learn differently from one another and each must be regarded as an individual worthy of our interest, respect, and best efforts.

Our mission is to educate our students to become intellectually active adults, to inspire them to reach individual excellence, and to challenge them to become responsible members of society.

The Compass School is a small learning community in which all children can excel. Our practices are developmentally appropriate, and we offer children a continuous, multiyear educational experience. An integrated, project based curriculum provides the foundation to develop each individual as a cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and reflective being. Our strength is gathered through reciprocal relationships among all members of the learning community. Students graduate knowing they are members of a global community, having developed an awareness of and practiced their personal, social and ecological responsibility.

Westerly Public Schools … a place where learning has no limits and academic excellence is measured one child at a time. Core Beliefs: 1. Learning is the heart and soul of what we do. 2. All children are unique individuals with special gifts and talents. 3. Teaching is hard work in an organization where all children are expected to learn at high levels. 4. All people in the organization, both children and adults, should be valued and respected. 5. Risk taking, problem solving and creativity are traits we embrace. 6. The community is our “customer” and their ideas and opinions are listened to and acted upon.
