AMERICAN PREPARATORY ACADEMY--LEA
Our Mission: To provide an orderly, safe and nurturing learning environment wherein content-rich, efficient curriculum and research-based instructional methodologies are utilized to ensure that every student achieves academic success and develops good character based on concrete measurements. Our Philosophy: Student academic achievement is the primary goal of American Prep. We believe that only when students master fundamentals, and are fluent in the basic foundational knowledge of the major disciplines can they move on to effectively express their knowledge and master higher-level skills. Therefore, the foundation of our instruction will focus on mastery of fundamentals. We define mastery as the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills repeatedly and accurately. This requires repeated instruction in the subject matter, increasing degree of challenge and considerable practice. As our students master the fundamentals, our instruction will focus on sequential building of conceptual knowledge and promoting independent expression of knowledge. Finally, our instruction will focus on individual internalization of conceptual knowledge, expressed in extensive written work and verbal presentation, preparing our students for advanced study at the high school level. These levels of instruction and knowledge attainment follow the classical education model of the Trivium—grammar, logic and rhetoric. American Preparatory Academy respects this well-founded, proven educational model and uses it in selecting and implementing the school's curriculum. School Vision: To provide a safe, engaging, nurturing learning environment that utilizes research-based, efficient curriculum and proven instructional methodologies to ensure that EVERY CHILD achieves academic success and develops good character based on concrete measurements.

CANYON RIM ACADEMY
Academic excellence is within reach at Canyon Rim Academy, a new public K-6 charter school located below Parley’s Canyon. Canyon Rim Academy is nestled in the quiet Canyon Rim community of Salt Lake County, adjacent to a twelve-acre county park and within easy access to from I-80 and I-215. Canyon Rim Academy occupies the former Canyon Rim Elementary property located at 3005 South 2900 East, which it leases from Granite School District. Immediately after Granite determined to close Canyon Rim Elementary, a group of parents living nearby began the arduous process of preparing a charter application, competing with over 15 other applicants for one of the three remaining charters available from the State Board of Education. Erik Olson, President of Canyon Rim Academy’s Board of Trustees, attributes the school’s success to the top-notch education plan in its charter application, together with the commitment of parents to make the school a reality: “Based on our education plan centered on E.D. Hirsch’s Core Knowledge Sequence, complemented by Envision/Singapore Math, together with numerous other curriculum enhancements and programs, we consider Canyon Rim Academy to be the premier Utah elementary school.” With Core Knowledge and Envision Math (supplemented with Singapore strategies) at the heart of the school curriculum, together with courses in art, music, P.E., and computer technology, and programs to enhance student literacy, Canyon Rim Academy is able to provide a well rounded liberal arts education to students that will prepare them for intermediate and secondary education. HAWTHORN ACADEMY
Hawthorn Academy believes that our primary mission is three-fold; 1) to engender a true “love of learning” in our students, 2) to address the needs of the “whole child”, and 3) to provide a world-class educational foundation that prepares students for life. Our teaching methodologies and Program of Instruction are geared towards achieving this three-fold mission. The framework for our Comprehensive Program of Instruction is built around the selection of best-in-class curriculum, from respected and proven publishers, combined with the world-renowned International Baccalaureate (IB) as a teaching methodology that serves as an overlay to our curriculum. Our curriculum is also designed to be compliant with the Utah State Core Curriculum. Our instructional methods are focused on in-class activities, content, teaching methods and homework that are congruent with the IB philosophy. As a result, the student experience is more focused on system inquiry and Socratic methods more than rote memorization, repetition and “kill and drill” methods. Rather than a lot of busy work, homework is purposeful with the express objective of 1) teaching children to be responsible, 2) engaging parents in the learning process, and 3) reinforcing classroom learning. We believe that most children have an innate love of learning. We want to reinforce their natural desire to question, probe, understand, and then enhance these traits by teaching them how to execute practical application of what they have learned outside of the classroom. We also want them to develop a life-long love of learning that doesn’t fizzle out during the educational experience.

OPEN CLASSROOM
The Open Classroom is an innovative school that invites children, teachers and parents to collaborate as a community that inspires and celebrates the adventure of learning. The OC was granted Charter status by the Salt Lake City School District beginning in 2006. Our operations look very similar to a neighborhood school, but charter status allows us additional autonomy to focus on teaching and learning in accordance with our philosophy. The OC teachers advance the core curriculum outlined by the state. The difference between the OC and traditional programs is in the way we learn. We believe that students learn most effectively when they are immersed in meaningful authentic learning experiences where they can: practice self reliance, assume responsibility for their own learning, develop positive self-esteem and confidence, experience decision-making and problem-solving opportunities, learn cooperatively in multi-aged settings, and be supported by active parental participation and involvement in classroom and program operation. Blended grade classrooms are an important element in our school. Educational research shows that multi-aged learning environments facilitate individualized instruction where teachers focus on each student’s needs rather than grade level expectations. They also broaden the social peer group for children, offering a wider possibility of friendship choices. Other benefits of multi-aged classrooms: Model a family setting, encouraging a strong sense of community; Allow children to teach and learn from each other; Enable a teacher to have some children for more than one year, allowing a seamless continuation of the working/teaching relationship.

UTAH STATE OFFICE OF EDUCATION
Promises to Keep is a statement of vision and mission for Utah’s system of public education. The statement relies on the language of the Utah Constitution for its central premise. It is intended to provide focus to the work of the State Board of Education, the Utah State Office of Education, and all school districts, local boards of education, and charter schools within the general control and supervision of the Board. The Vision of Public Education: Utah’s public education system is created in the state Constitution to “secure and perpetuate” freedom. Freedom, as envisioned in the Utah Constitution, is a promise to future generations that requires: • Citizen participation in civic and political affairs. • Economic prosperity for the community. • Strong moral and social values.• Loyalty and commitment to constitutional government. The premise of Promises to Keep is that there are essential, core “promises” that leaders in the public education system should be clear about with citizens of Utah; that these “promises” are made as part of the civic compact at work as the citizens of Utah give into our hands resources for the public education system; that citizens should have high expectations regarding our success in the essential “promised” work of public education. The Mission of Public Education: Utah’s public education system keeps its constitutional promise by: • Ensuring literacy and numeracy for all Utah children. • Providing high quality instruction for all Utah children. • Establishing curriculum with high standards and relevance for all Utah children.• Requiring effective assessment to inform high quality instruction and accountability.
