Our district is a vibrant learning community devoted to welcoming, exciting and challenging our students. Home to two schools, Lopez Island K-12 and Decatur Island K-8, we are a proactive group of innovators dedicated to offering a strenuous, globally focused education that engages students’ intellect, expands their horizons and builds their emotional and social skills. As a district we are experiencing many of the economic challenges facing the country. While we streamline some programs and trim others, we are confident that we will emerge with our outstanding program intact–continuing to imagine, dream and create an exhilarating education for all our students.
The district’s approximately 700 students are served by approximately 55 certificated teachers, 50 classified staff members, a K-8 principal and a half- time High School Principal/ half-time Superintendent. The Orcas Island Elementary School (K-6), the Orcas Island Middle School (7-8) and the Orcas Island High School (9-12) and the OASIS alternative programs for K-8 and high school students are all located on one 45-acre campus in the village of Eastsound on Orcas Island. The mission of the Orcas Island School District is to work in partnership with the families and community to create a respectful, nurturing, and challenging environment offering a relevant education founded on academic excellence and artistic expression. Our students are self-directed, compassionate, and responsible world citizens, alive with the love of learning.
