The Michigan Department of Education released the Top-to-Bottom rankings of Michigan schools last week. Fair Haven Elementary is being recognized as a “Reward School” for being in the top 5 percent of schools making gains in student achievement.Algonac High School and Algonac Elementary School made some really nice gains in the rankings as well. Algonquin Middle School and Millside Elementary School declined in their rankings due to the “gap” between the highest achieving students and lowest achieving students. New interventions will be targeted at our lowest achieving students in an attempt to close the gap.

Capac is located on the western edge of St. Clair County, approximately forty-five miles north of Detroit. Capac’s Main Street was once a popular stopping place for those traveling between Port Huron and Flint on horseback. At that time, farms surrounded the downtown district. Although evidence of this bygone era still exists on Main Street, Capac is steadily changing from an agricultural community with a thriving downtown, to a bedroom community for the cities of Flint and Detroit. While there are still many families who have lived in Capac for generations, they are now outnumbered by those who have relocated from urban areas.Capac is a village of about 2,000 residents in western St. Clair County. In the past 20 years, Capac has grown from a small farming community to a thriving business and residential area. The district's buses transport more than 1,400 students from their homes to school every day. The school system is the hub of many activities in this peaceful community.

Memphis Teachers have once again stepped up to help the district and students by agreeing to significant concessions. With the devastating cuts by the State for the next school year, Memphis Community Schools, as all other Michigan districts are struggling with at least a 6% cut in support. Coupled with increased costs of fuel, health insurance and energy, the budget for our children's education is severely strained. To survive next year the district is attempting to cut $900,000 from the budget. Declining enrollment also will result in significantly less dollars.
