The Brookings Public School District was organized in April 1879. A long term commitment to quality facilities and a continuous process of developing long-ranged plans for meeting the program and facility needs is important to the district. Carefully planned maintenance and remodeling activities have ensured effective use of all the buildings. Use of technology is an important tool in the educational development of students from elementary to high school. Networking between buildings is complete, and Internet access is available in all classrooms and offices throughout the district. Electronic communication with the State Department of Education for student records provides accurate information and efficiency in submitting necessary state reports. Parent/teacher communication has been enhanced by the use of the homework hotline and e-mail messaging. The Brookings School District has consistently maintained composite scores on the standardized achievement tests in the average to above average range. As many as eight National Merit Scholar finalists have been identified in a single year. Strong academic programs as well as comprehensive programs of cocurriciular activities and organizations are provided at the middle and high school levels.
