EXCELSIOR ACADEMY
About School District: Excelsior Academy presents a broad, classical education by basing its teachings around the Core Knowledge Sequence. In each grade scholars are exposed to a broad range of historical, scientific, and cultural topics that build on one another to prepare students for later educational success. The scope of knowledge comprises what a culturally literate individual should know at each grade level. Excelsior Academy uses ability grouping in reading, math, and spelling. Leveled learning enables scholars to be taught at their challenge level. Scholars are assessed continuously to ensure proper level placement. Direct Instruction (DI) is a teaching model utilized throughout our curriculum. DI involves carefully planned lessons designed for precise delivery from the teacher and verbal responses from scholars. These responses allow for greater teacher monitoring. Results show a higher mastery for each scholar. Excelsior Academy uses the CHAMPS behavior management program. This program is used school-wide to allow a consistent, positive and proactive approach in our classrooms. Excelsior Academy feels that a big part of being successful in academics is being organized. Every student uses a docket to keep classwork and homework in one location. Weekly learning plans are another organizational tool used school-wide to involve parents in knowing what is happening in their student's classroom. The learning plan shows daily lessons, student behavior and communication from the teacher. Students have the opportunity to attend "specials" classes of art, music and P.E. Students are taught responsibility through accountaility and good citizenship through our Builders program. The mission of Excelsior Academy is to educate scholars with a broad classical foundation of knowledge, assisting them with opportunities to learn at their challenge level, in an intentionally inviting environment to help scholars acquire a life-long love of learning.
