Countless hours are spent by town and school officials to develop a responsible budget. For a few years in a row, essential programs and staff have been reduced. Maine School Administrative District #35 is comprised of two rural communities, Eliot and South Berwick. Located on the southern Maine border adjacent to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the communities are able to maintain their rural character, while having access to facilities and technology normally only available in larger urban areas. Neither town has any major industry, although many parents and residents work for high technology companies in adjacent areas. The tax base for both towns is residential rather than industrial.MSAD 35 students excel academically, athletically, and in the arts. Our district's per pupil costs remain well below the state average, yet our students consistently perform above the state average in all state-assessed grade levels. Our community supports our educational programs and our parents are very engaged in all of our schools. Wiscasset Middle School held a very special assembly on May 8th, National Teacher Appreciation Day. The assembly was to announce that Mrs. Tricia Campbell had been chosen to be one of the 2012 Unum Maine Teachers' Hall of Fame "Starting 9." This is the seventh year that Unum and the Portland Sea Dogs have teamed up to highlight the great work Maine teachers do in the classroom everyday. They choose three primary, three middle school, and three high school teachers to be their Starting 9. Mrs. Campbell and the other eight teachers will be honored at the Sea Dogs' game on June 8th. They will receive a personalized Sea Dogs' uniform, six tickets to the game, a meal for them and their guests, a check for $500.00, and the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The communities of Caribou, Limestone and Stockholm have joined to form The Eastern Aroostook Regional School Unit #39 (RSU 39). RSU 39 is proud to offer a top quality education program that strives to meet the individual needs of all students. Serving over 1,700 students, a staff of 250 professionals and support staff work together to achieve our goals. All staff work to ensure high academic achievement for every child and the desire to work diligently in providing the knowledge and skills necessary for students to lead successful lives.RSU 39 includes: Hilltop School (Grades Pre K-2), Teague Park School (Grades 3-5), Caribou Middle School (Grades 6-8), and Caribou High School (Grades 9-12) and Limestone Community School (Grades Pre K – 12). Caribou Regional Technology Center serves as a trades skills training center for 250 high school students in Caribou as well as Presque Isle, Washburn, Fort Fairfield and Limestone. Approximately 2,000 area residents participate in Adult Education, which provides post secondary educational opportunities as well as high school and general vocational programming and serves the literacy, vocational and business training needs of the community.The RSU 39 Board of Education strongly supports athletics and other co-curricular activities. These programs are seen as integral and important components of a student's educational experience. The RSU #3 Strategic Design Process grows out of a vote taken by the RSU 3 Board of Directors in the Spring of 2011 to move RSU 3 towards the implementation of a proficiency based system of education (otherwise known as a standards based or mass customized learning system).·The strategic design process will involve the creation of a community education design team and a staff education design team.· Both teams will have student representatives on them.· Both teams will be charged with accomplishing the following two task:1.
