The Killeen Independent School District is a growing, thriving district in Central Texas serving a 400 square mile area including the communities of Killeen, Harker Heights, Nolanville, and the Fort Hood military installation. With an enrollment of 41,969 students, the district is the 26th largest in Texas. Killeen ISD is the second largest employer in the area with Fort Hood being the largest. KISD staff consists of 5,315 full time employees: 45.8% - Teachers, 22.0% - Paraprofessionals, 20.8% - Classified, 7.7% - Professional Support, 2.9% - Campus Admin and 1.1% - Central Admin. The Board of Trustees consists of seven elected members who serve three year terms of office. The teachers currently serving KISD have an average of 9.9 years of teaching experience and an average of 7.5 years within KISD. More than 18.5 % of the teachers have a masters or doctoral degree. Class size averages vary throughout the district with a range of 22.1 students per class in PK – 4 and 23.1 students per class in 5th – 12th. The district provides various programs to support struggling students. Students are provided Response to Intervention (RtI) interventions within the school day, English as a Second Language instruction, and appropriate services for special needs students. Tutoring is structured within and outside the school day. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) provides tutorial assistance within the school day for middle and high school students. After school programs include the district’s Math Center, Tutor.com, and various tutoring programs offered by individual campuses. Communities in Schools is a special program available for at-risk learners. The Killeen ISD’s Site-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Committee consists of teachers, other professional staff members, parents of students enrolled in the district, community members, and business representatives. The KISD Board has also established the District Employee Advocacy Committee (DEAC), consisting of teachers and other professional staff members, to enable two-way communication between employees and the Superintendent. This committee brings forward ideas, questions, and concerns from employees. Each campus has an established campus-level SBDM and DEAC committee. Killeen ISD also has a District Conduct Committee (DCC) to develop district level policies and monitor discipline procedures administered throughout the district.
